Project Specification:

Major UK Steel Works that recently updated the power supply to their Electric Arc Furnaces, uses AF-X Fireblocker Nano aerosol extinguishing generators, for their chosen fire suppression technology.

Following a detailed site risk assessment, the client’s insurance provider requested fire suppression systems to be installed within all HV sub-stations, Transformer Pens, HV Cable Vaults and Electrical Switchgear Rooms.

Continuous supply of power is essential for the plant, any downtime needs to be minimum and work in the risk area reduced as much as possible, making AF-X Fireblocker the preferred choice.

Protecting a total of 24 areas deemed a high voltage risk, Fireblocker Nano offered protection for areas with a risk from Fire Class A, B & C type fires.

Some of the reasons AF-X Fireblocker was chosen;

Enclosed rooms whilst relatively well sealed, with minimal process penetrations, cannot be made airtight and hence unsuitable for gaseous fire suppression. Due to these openings, AF-X Fireblocker aerosol was a good option.
Minimize consequences of an activation, there was concern the use of a water-based suppression would cause significant damage to the areas.
Thanks to the integrated X connector, AF-X Fireblocker is a plug-and-play-system. Should the system need to be replenished or extended it is a simple procedure to replace or add extinguishing generators.
No high-pressure bottle storage taking up valuable space as well as avoiding the need to comply with onerous pressure vessel regulations.
Varying sizes of extinguishing generators to suit the local environment, i.e., Nano BL large box generators for total room flooding and Nano CM small cylinder generators for cable pits and under floor voids.
Fireblocker Nano aerosol is non-conductive of electricity and can be installed in areas with up to 75kV.
